Unifi PoE hack
Not really a hack, but smart use of some off the shelf components:
It is possible to power a Unifi accesspoint with a USB-C powerbank for off-the-grid usage (combined with a 4G router), ideal for a hackers on a bike tour. All you need is:
- USB-C powerbank that supports 20V (like the Xiaomi Mi Powerbank 3, sometimes as low as €35,-)
- even better would be a pass-through/UPS USB-C power bank like the Zmi PowerPack No. 20 Model QB826G but it's 4 times as expensive
- USB-C to USB-C cable
- ZY12PDN USB-C Fast Charge Trigger Poll Detector, set to 20V (around €5,-)
- Gigabit Power Over Ethernet Passive PoE Injector Splitter (around €3,-)
- a barrel jack 5.5x2.1mm to power the injector
- a network or patch cable
- optional/recommended: an uplink like a 4G router or just run it in mesh mode
Alternatively, one could make a 100Mbit DIY passive injector (unverified) by having plus on pins 4+5 and minus on pins 7+8.
The uptime using the aforementioned powerbank was 19:15h (when the AP was mostly idling)
